Industrial Waste Water Treatment and Resource Recovery

Hydronics Corporation has been providing efficient and cost effective industrial wastewater and resource recovery solutions for nearly 50 years. Bringing experience and exposure to a broad spectrum of industrial process and wastewater systems, Hydronics excels in the recovery, re-use and re-cycling of process water and/or raw materials. Our bench and pilot scale testing and evaluation capabilities provide a valuable resource in achieving these goals.

Wastewater Auditing and Characterization

We provide comprehensive water or
wastewater sampling and analyses including
segregating unit process contributions
to isolate primary sources and minimize
the volume that may have to be
treated and optimize water consumption
and discharge.

Bench Scale Treatability Evaluation

Using our in-house laboratory facilities,
Hydronics experts will help you evaluate
the efficacy of treatment techniques
before you commit to capital investment.
Because we do not represent any
equipment or material vendors, we can
help you determine the most effective
equipment and cost effective investment
for your remediation needs.

Chemical/Photo Oxidation

Ozone has a significantly higher oxidation potential than either hydrogen peroxide or chlorine. Unlike peroxide or chlorine, ozone may be efficiently generated on-site eliminating the need for perpetually purchased chemical oxidants. When combined and configured with the proper UV source, even wastewater with BOD values of several thousand ppm can be effectively treated to at or below permit levels with a well designed system. Recently, a 1400 ppm BOD wastewater stream was reduced to below the permit level of 300 ppm with a 20 min. contact time. This would result in a yearly surcharge savings of over $400,000.00 . We routinely conduct bench scale testing to initially determine if any given wastewater stream is conducive to this technique, and can work with you to design and install a system that will cost-effectively accomplish your goals.

Precipitation Systems

Hydronics has vast experience in precipitation applications, employing selective precipitation and recovery of heavy metals for AMD streams, precipitation of mineral colloids or clays, and organic or biological materials using conventional polymers and inorganic agents, or necessary combinations thereof. Frequently, precipitating agents are ineffectively prescribed, the optimum dosage is not determined, nor are system chemistry effects such as pH, temperature, or electrolyte balance evaluated. Proper dosing rates and mixing are other factors that promote effective precipitation.. The ideal system is developed initially at the bench level in order to select the most effective agent or combination of agents, optimum dosage rate, and /or pH adjustment. Hydronics maintains a broad spectrum of polymers and other precipitating agents in order to evaluate and design the optimum system for any given application.

Filtration

Pre-coat filtration, and sand filtration are effective techniques that are frequently not considered in specialty or conventional wastewater treatment. Pre-coat filters have inherent flexibility in adjusting the pre-coat mixture to specific requirements, and have the added advantage of not only removing insoluble materials but concurrently may lower organic loading such as BOD/COD/TOC , emulsified oils or other organics as well, having a duality of purpose that is infrequently considered. Sand filters are inexpensive alternatives to vacuum or pressure filtration and when properly designed may be just as effective, with lower operating costs. The quality of the sand medium, depth of bed, cross sectional area and application rate are major considerations. Valveless sand filters have the added benefit of being operator free. Hydronics has real, practical operating experience that is an advantage when selecting a treatment device.

Biological Systems

Biological wastewater treatment has become a conventional and well defined civil engineering discipline. Waste activated sludge (WAS) systems, fixed film systems, trickling filters, or anaerobic digestion are all well established techniques for producing high quality effluents from industrial and municipal sources.

Frequently, however, operators of these systems are faced with plant upsets or other failures that have significant consequences and may be difficult to diagnose or rectify. Hydronics has decades of experience in the operation of biological wastewater treatment plants, as well as assisting others who are achieving less than acceptable water quality. We can rapidly assist in diagnosing and improving performance of biological systems, including plant or operating modifications, and have significant resources to draw upon in insuring any system can operate to its’ maximum potential.

Ion Exchange Technology & Application

Ion exchange is one of the most versatile water treatment and conditioning techniques available, and is by far the method of choice for conventional water softeneing and is still used for large scale water demineralization, and selective or specialty applications where other technologies may not be useful. It still competes favorably with RO techniques, and has some distinct advantages. Additionally, it is a very passive and low energy process. Hydronics founding engineers were well known in the field and were innovators and authors of multiple treatises and texts on the subject, from the greensand days to the specialty synthetic resin developments. IX is a useful process for concentration of process streams, resource recovery, polishing or production of high purity water, and innumerable other applications. Well conceived and designed IX systems are still the method of choice for a wide variety of applications. In addition to expertise in a multitude of such applications, Hydronics designed a system modification for conventional large scale demineralization of boiler feed water in power plants that effectively recovers and re-uses over 50% of regenerant chemicals and substantial quantities of water on an annual basis, saving millions of dollars in operating costs. We are also experts in the recovery of chromate from plating streams and contaminated sites.

Monitoring and Control Systems

Hydronics can design and install cost effective single point sensors or meters, for flow monitoring/recording or control, pH monitoring or control, operational control of unit processes, and automate controls for existing facilities, as well as our own installations.. We can also troubleshoot, repair or replace existing installations.
